Paint, painty paintpaintpaint

So, we got a TON of (but not all of the) exterior painting done this weekend!
It's going to look especially impressive if I show an old 'Before' picture, though :)
Who could forget my old garage? ;)
Working our way up the front of the house.
The color is 'Slate' from Restoration Hardware, mixed by Sherwin-Williams
I was lucky enough to have several friends and family stop by Saturday and Sunday to help out.
They're the best :)
Many hands make light work...or so the saying goes.
Two days, two coats.
Boom.
Touching up to do here and there...but an enormous amount of work has been done!

Solarium: Start to Finish!

This is what the house looked like in the listing when I bought it - cute right?
Nice little sitting room right inside the front door and adjacent to the living room.
Then I saw this. Everything might have been easier...if I hadn't seen this. ;)

So, naturally, we ripped everything apart..
..and fixed the things that needed fixed..
Here's mom/former roommate finishing up the last of the insulation. As with the rest of the house, the wiring was completely redone in the solarium, as was all the insulation, wallboard, wood floors, and trim..though, a lot of the woodwork throughout the house was salvaged.
Hooray for drywall!
..well..sort of. See, I got a deal on some really nice windows; so, rather than replace the two that were there, I decided to take it back to the way it looked it that damned old picture.

Finishing up the new windows and front door.
All in!
Testing out my new grilles :)
Trim is up and ready for sanding (which left dust ALL over the house), priming, and painting!
As of last night: all painted and ready to go! (As you can also see, the greenhouse is in full swing..)
Looks pretty good, if I do say!

Never thought I'd see the day..

We had hung siding as far as we could without making some more decisions..
First, the window needed to be re-installed.
..and trimmed
We added those pieces along the top of the bay window to make siding up to the shingles easier and cleaner looking.
Progress: Day One
Paint samples and completed siding. Dad even mulched my leaves!

I never see it from over here - it looks so small!
Sunday progress. Siding: COMPLETE!
A couple little pieces of trim left to hang around the bay window and two new porch columns to set. For now though, I think I'll catch up on some sleep :)

Siding by the bay

The bay windows without the metal trim and storm windows.
We only broke two of the storm panes.. :S
For the first time in a LONG time, we can say that three sides of the house are completely wrapped in new siding! All we have left to do is this little bit around the front of the house! That said, there's a LOT of cutting to do..should be interesting :)
The leaves have definitely started falling..looks like we better finish these outside projects soon!

MORE windows?!

That's a big window..
These two will be installed on either side of the larger window (above) and replace the existing bay windows in the living room. With these three, I will have run out of windows to replace in the house..THAT'S a milestone! :)

Holding down the fort

See those columns on my front stoop?
Ta-da! We found new old columns in the East Village, downtown Des Moines!

The rings around the columns needed a little work - here I had already chisled out some of the damaged area..

..and filled it in with a new piece.

The new piece fit pretty well, but still needed a little fine sanding to match the surrounding area.
Pretty good fit, wouldn't you say?
Fancy pants! Good find, Dad - and thanks again for all the help!

New Demolition Videos

After some technological wrangling, I was finally able to get the rest of the demolition video off my phone!
With pictures, I’m used to being able to email them to myself for editing, or just upload them directly. Well..all the videos I took were too long to send either way – I had to call in a favor from the cell phone folks. Love my small town service J
Either way, here is the link to my YouTube page. It’s not sorted correctly (and I’m not sure how to do that yet?), but the videos have been numbered so you could watch them in order if you wanted.
Phew..check that one off the list!

This weekend

This weekend saw lots of changes around the house – most noticeably, paint!
As I mentioned in my previous post, my friend Anna came down for a couple days last week to start the painting project. She was excited for it and I was not..so it was a good match.
I have no idea why, but for the last several months I've just felt like part of the dining room needed to be blue.
The other two walls are the tan color from the living room and kitchen.
Moody blue..
Well, once she started, I got the fever and have been picking at it ever since. I stopped to attend the Iowa Craft Beer Festival Saturday afternoon in Des Moines (work-related…I promise) and to putter around in the yard a bit on Sunday.
My painter: I know how to pay my debts..
Painting around the kitchen.
My bedroom door. Even with this lighter color, the trim paint really pops!
Living room: painted, sans TV.
The other big change is that I’m flying solo again. No more roommate, no more cat..no more rent money. It’s really for the best – this was always meant to be a temporary thing, and it was. Roommate found a place of her own, and I get my house back. Free of cat hair and other people’s laundry. J
The other (random) project I created for myself was sort of…just more work? I moved the large pile of foundation stone out of the side yard and into the driveway. This way, I’ll be able to see what I’ve got when I’m using it to edge around the landscaping. I’ll also be able to kill off the weeds in that area and start fresh with new grass once I’ve got everything the way I want it. It will also be nice to have that out of the way when we start up the siding project in the front of the house.
I still have that little bit of siding to replace on this side..and, of course, the lawn is overgrown and weedy here now, so it will be easier to deal with all of that with these stones moved. Did I mention these stones before? They came from the foundation of the house next door. $30!!
You have no idea what this did for my OCD. Soo goood.
Speaking of which, I’m getting ready to refinance my construction note so that I can actually AFFORD to start the siding project in the front of the house. When I bought the house, my banker and I decided that it would actually be better for me to go the way of the construction note – this way, I didn’t have to put money down (my sweat equity and the improvements made counted as a down payment) and it afforded me a lot more flexibility. I pay a higher interest rate for it, and it expired after a year (had to get a small extension to finish up the kitchen), but now I’ll be able to refinance (at 2.86%, thankyouverymuch), get a little more money for this last big push, and then – one day – just come home and ENJOY being here rather than feel like I have to work at it all the time! J
If you've never had fresh broccoli...
OOH, I’ve also got broccoli popping in the garden! Several green tomatoes on the vine, lots of carrots, a few herbs..peppers..a cucumber..Brussels sprouts, and a lot of weeds. Pretty exciting stuff!
